Researcher Says He's Ready to Test HIV Vaccine

Wednesday October 18, 2006
A University of Western Ontario HIV researcher Yong Kang says his HIV vaccine can be ready for human trials as early as next year if he can secure Food and Drug Administration approval for human trials. The virus has proven to be effective in boosting the defenses of the macaque monkey, allowing the monkey's immune system to recognize HIV. Dr. Kang's vaccine is unique when compared to previously trialed HIV vaccines in that it is a two-part vaccine comprised of a whole dead HIV virus particle, and a genetic fragment. Other vaccines had just a single genetic fragment that attempted to stimulate the body's immune system. Read more about this important step in vaccine research.
