New Initiative Will Provide Care for Nurses on the Front Lines of the HIV/AIDS Battle

From Mark Cichocki, R.N., About.com GuideDecember 4, 2006

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) and global medical technology company Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) have announced a multi-year initiative to provide health and wellness services to HIV/AIDS healthcare providers in several of the hardest hit African nations. In sub-Saharan Africa, healthcare systems are experiencing a severe scarcity of healthcare workers, due to the HIV pandemic, migration and very difficult working conditions. This human capacity crisis is colliding with the overwhelming healthcare needs of the region, weakening already fragile systems, challenged in delivering both basic and life-saving health services. The collaboration between BD and ICN focuses on the development of wellness centers to provide comprehensive health services for these vital healthcare workers and their immediate families.
