3 Million Injection Drug Users May Be HIV Positive

A recent study published in The Lancet has found that the proportion of IV drug users that are HIV positive may exceed 40 percent in at least nine countries around the world. In the US for instance, about 1 percent of people 15 to 64 years old are IV drug users. Of those about 16 percent are HIV positive. In comparison, less than one third of a percent or Argentina's population are IV drug users however almost 50 percent of those are HIV positive. What all this means is that of the 16 million IV drug users around the world, about 3 million are HIV positive. Obviously, a worldwide effort to reduce these numbers is in order.
