Obama Chooses Pastor Rick Warren to Deliver Inaugural Invocation - Was this the Right Choice?

Saturday December 20, 2008
Before spending even one day working in the Oval Office, Barack Obama has sparked anger and criticism with his choice of Evangelical Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation on January 20th. The choice especially angered pro-choice and same-gender marriage supporters because of Warren's view on these topics. Probably best known as the Leader of the Saddleback Church and the author of the best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life, Warren has publicly voiced his opposition to same sex marriages and has labeled homosexuality as a sin. Ironically, during the election, Obama received a great deal of support from same sex marriage advocates as well as the gay community. With regard to his stance on HIV/AIDS, Warren has led a movement to encourage churches and ministries around the world to become more involved in the battle to slow the epidemic. Still it looks like Obama has angered many of his supporters with this appointment; what do you think about his choice?

Obama says he’s against same-sex marriages, too. “With regard to his stance on HIV/AIDS, Warren has led a movement to encourage churches and ministries around the world to become more involved in the battle to slow the epidemic.” Warren sounds like a helper.

We need all the help we can get in making people aware of HIV/AIDS. I know a lot of people that are aginst same sex marriages, Warren is no diffrent, but these same people are more than willing to help get the word out about HIV/AIDS, to help stop the epidimic. These same people are willing to do any thing that they can to help despite their beliefs, because they know that this is a deadly epidemic and many deaths could be avoided with the right education. With all of the cuts in HIV/AIDS funding and medical care we need all the help we can get, just because one does not believe in same sex marriages does not mean that one will not be a major asset to the HIV/AIDS campaigain. What makes this country so great is that we can disagree on so mant things but when it comes down to it we can come togeather despite our beliefs and to try to save peoples lives.

Obama may say he’s against same-sex marriages but there’s an ocean of difference between him and someone like Warren, who demonizes gays. Warren and his fundamentalist ilk are only interested in showing “compassion” to heterosexuals, particularly children, who’ve been infected “through no fault of their own.” His so-called compassion and concern are highly selective. Moreover, he’s a rank bigot and extremist who believes, and has said, that people who do not believe in God don’t belong in politics. There are many people, and many of them gay, who have made enormous contributions to the fight against AIDS. Warren isn’t one of them. He’s a sanctimonious fraud.
