Christine Maggiore Died Believing HIV Not the Cause of AIDS

Sunday January 4, 2009
Noted HIV positive AIDS skeptic Christine Maggiore died peacefully December 27, 2008 after a long battle with pneumonia. She was best known for her efforts to to re-examine conventional HIV and AIDS theory. Specifically, she felt HIV was not the cause of AIDS and that HIV was actually a harmless virus. Ironically, her HIV positive daughter Eliza died three years ago of what the LA County Coroner deemed to be PCP; Pneumocystis pneumonia. Her beliefs were so strong that Maggiore filed a lawsuit against the LA County Coroner for claiming Eliza died of PCP. While many felt her beliefs were way off track, she did stimulate healthy debate over the cause and affect between HIV and AIDS. She also was the founder of Alive & Well AIDS Alternatives, a non-profit organization that challenged "common assumptions" about AIDS. She also published a book called "What if Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?" that explained her beliefs in detail. While many experts wonder if her death will weaken the HIV denialist movement, members of the movement assured them that Maggiore's would not spell the end of the denialist movement.

(1) Andrew Maniotis says:

Eliza Jane Scovill was a 3 1/2 year-old child who died in a hospital emergency room 36 hours after imbibing amoxicillin. She had never been exposed to amoxicillin or any other beta-lactams before. Until an earache and the prescribed antibiotic, Eliza Jane had been an exceptionally healthy child who never missed a day of pre-school, and who was gaining weight. An autopsy was performed immediately after the death and “no cause of death” was found by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office where her case had been referred. Approximately one week after the autopsy, the coroner’s office learned of her parents’ unorthodox views on HIV and AIDS and the testing history of the mother (inconclusive, positive, inconclusive, positive, negative, positive, and positive). Rather than ordering a second analysis, another medical examiner (James K. Ribe, under 4 indictments for “fixing” other cases) who was not originally assigned to the case was “brought in to help resolve the case,” and revised autopsy findings were released claiming Eliza Jane died of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and “HIV encephalopathy.” Eliza Jane’s symptoms during her 36 hour crisis period, the similarities of the autopsy findings and premorbid symptoms to amoxicillin package insert descriptions of late adverse reactions, and descriptions of delayed reactions in the medical literature, do not support an “AIDS” diagnosis. The fact that she had 10,800 lymphocytes/µl at the time of her death as measured by the hospital indicates that she had more than twice the normal numbers of lymphocytes (AIDS patients have about 1000), casting doubt on any diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, or any other illness associated with immune suppression.

The bloodthirsty and mean spirited comments made about this family, and the interference by health and legal authorities caused stress so severe in Christine, that eventually her immune system collapsed and she gave up.

Her recent history is nothing if not a Salem witch hunt that is beyond the bounds of human rights violations.

(2) Seth Kalichman says:

Christine Maggiore was misled by Peter Duesberg into thinking that HIV is harmless and HIV treatments are toxic poison . Ultimately she promoted this same pseudoscience-based denialism at her own peril. Many others were harmed by her relentless spreading of false information that confused people about HIV testing and treatment.
The misinformation and disinformation of denialism is dangerous because the Internet easily allows fakes and frauds to masquerade as genuine doctors and scientists. Denialism tells people with HIV what they want to hear – that HIV does not exist, that AIDS is caused by stress, and that taking vitamins and eating healthy will make everything ok. But it does not. It did not for Christine Maggiore and will not for anyone else with HIV/AIDS.

Thanks for posting this story. It does not take long to figure out that AIDS denialism is the same phenomenon as holocaust denial and 9/11 truth seeking. He sad story of AIDS denialism that enmeshed Christine Maggiore is told in a new book coming out Denying AIDS: Conspiracy Theories, Pseudoscience, and Human Tragedy (all Royalties donated to buy HIV medications in Africa) published by Springer/Copernicus Books. Every time I hear this refrain: “It’s not the virus, it’s the toxic medication that’s killing these people!” I think, gosh, I guess all those friends of mine who died back in the early ’80s died of the medication they WOULD have been prescribed if they’d lived long enough.

Who knew?

(5) Richard Schooping says:

Life is what we believe it to be. There is no right or wrong, just recognizing growth. There is another and deeper way to know AIDS and HIV, beyond the gray area of our learnings. We must know who we are. People and doctors will do their best, but it is up to each individual to observe and reflect upon AIDS in their lives. Let us not get too attached to the symptoms; it is the cause that needs to be addressed.

While many felt her beliefs were way off track, she did stimulate healthy debate over the cause and affect [sic] between HIV and AIDS.

There was nothing “healthy” about Maggiore’s activities. Her HIV-AIDS denial likely killed her daughter and herself. Her denial activism convinced many, many other people to eschew anti-viral therapies and safer living choices (condom use, preventative measures during childbirth to reduce the risk of passing on HIV to an infant, proper management of depressed immune function, etc.).

The actual scientific debate over the causation of AIDS via HIV infection ended at least 15 years ago. The denial community has insulated themselves from reason, but put the rest of the world at risk by promoting a dangerous indifference towards the transmission and monitoring of HIV.

Hold on a second. This woman lived for 17 YEARS after being diagnosed with HIV, even though she never took AIDS meds. Doesn’t that count for anything? I mean, if, when she was diagnosed, she had turned to the doctor and said, “I’m not going to take any HIV medication, and I’m going to live for another 17 years,” the doctor would have said, “that’s ABSURD.” The fact of the matter is that no matter what this woman died of, people were going to say it was due to AIDS. People die at age 52 all the time, and stress kills FAR more people than AIDS ever has.

RIP Christine. I volunteered to speak on one of Alive and Well’s panels in the late 90’s. Statistically, I should be dead several times over, but it’s over 20 years that I’ve been labeled positive with no symptoms and no medications ever.

As long as people keep thinking outside of the box her efforts will not have been in vain. She got people to think. To question, to see things in a different light. If we fail to do this as a species we do not progress and we do not grow.

She left behind a healthy son and husband. She lived for years without medication, giving others a choice.

I found Christine and her views to be interesting. She took a chance, she went against the establishments views, and like people in every time period was crucified for it.

20 years from now I don’t know what people will be saying, but I do know if they stop asking questions and looking for the truth, the species will not progress.

I think she was a light and an assest to the world. She got people to think and that is one of the most important thing free people can do for themselves. Think and ask questions, don’t accept everything that you are told.

HIV was made to make mass about of money of unhealthy people IE drugs users and gay people.

Ask any doc when you become hiv+ you HAVE to take meds for the rest of your life LOL sounds like a scam to me

You ask why does everyone in Africa have aids well do you think they live as well as people in the UK and USA?
when you dont eat, sleep, think right your body will shut down.

People really thought the world was flat at one point and MOST people in this world thinks JC a half naked jew will come back and save them so i will leave you thinking about that

This is utterly ridiculous. The HIV virus has a dormancy period, which can last numerous years, and it is not the only virus to have such periods. For instance, another virus strand with such periods is herpes and its multitude of branches. If you don’t seek medication you can only hope to live through the dormant period. Christine Maggiore was an obvious case for such hypothesis.
Don’t get me wrong I appreciate individuality and a healthy skepticism towards government, but use logic. Aids and Hiv, both show up, same time and no one’s ever seen either before? Clearly they are related, don’t delude yourself into believing otherwise.
Also the gentleman or woman who posts as kain is an uneducated rube, for you see physicians will prescribe you medications to treat HIV by hopefully extending the dormancy period, hence not fighting any certain noticable symptoms. Christine was irresponisble and foolhardy, typical of one who is so determined to be correct that they won’t allow themselves to see their obvious flaws. May she find peace.
