E-cards Used to Notify Partners of Your STD

Saturday January 31, 2009
What could be more awkward than telling a sexual partner you are infected with an STD or HIV. Now the Chicago Department of Public Health has begun a program they hope will make it easier to disclose your STDs. The online service InSpot permits people to send anonymous electronic cards to their sexual partners, notifying them they may have been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease. Chicagoans have been using the site since 2006 and have sent nearly 6000 cards thus far. While the effectiveness of the site has not been determined, InSpot is confident that if people take the cards seriously the site can be an effective means of STD disclosure and getting people into medical care.
