Swine Flu Update - How Can You Decrease Your Risk

From Mark Cichocki, R.N., About.com GuideApril 27, 2009

By now we have all heard the stories on television, the radio, and in the newspaper; the Swine Flu is out there and it has everyone concerned for their health. While there isn't a whole lot we can do right now, there are a few steps we can all take to protect ourselves and others from this potential pandemic.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue when coughing or sneezing then throw the tissue away.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol sanitizer.
  • Limit your contact with people who are sick, are coughing, or sneezing.
  • If you are sick, stay home from work or keep the kids home from school. Contact your doctor for instructions.

What's Your Opinion?

They say a pandemic flu is on the way. The media throws around words like fatal, crisis, death and rapid spreading killer. What do you believe? Is this nothing more than media hype? I would love to hear your opinion.

I have to admit that I’m skeptical. I think there has been a definite exaggeration by the media. On the other hand, I know that experts have been expecting a flu related pandemic for years. Perhaps this is it, but personally I doubt it.

This is a serious problem, esp. for those with immune compromising conditions. If you are on HIV meds you should have regular blood work to monitor the health of your immune system. Avoid travel to Mexico for the near future. Young, healthy people are having the most serious immune response to this flu virus. Even so, fatal cases are rare for now. Wash your hands!

The very sad state of media today: “All The News That`s Fit to Sensationalize” Sadly, we can`t believe anything we hear from media sources today. They no longer report the news, they create it.

I see this Swine Flu as an annoyance that may claim some lives. I personally own a solution of microscopic silver ions in distilled water as a plan B precaution. My plan A is for me to wear gloves often, and try to control my amount of stress. I feel confident that if I get sick, my natural herbs and silver solution may be helpful for my well-being. I also buy EmergenC vitamin C crystal/calcium drinks, and I always, espcially now, limit intake of sugary foods except sorbital and natural fruit sugars. I try to avoid meat products, except for fish. With these actions by me, I feel fairly safe. But I know safety is not guaranteed to anyone for sure.

I believe it has to do with politics, lets say that you infect an animal or person in Mexico to carry the virus back to America. It is the closest country and not to mention poor. Or maybe is another statistic of the mexican government to gain control of the country. What better way than to have en epidemic then creating “The miracle cure”. For those of you who do not understand what am saying watch the movie “V for Vendetta”

It is good to see the detailed US data. Would it not be a good idea to also give the worldwide data, for comparison?
