| New HIV Epidemic? New figures released recently show that the rate of HIV infection among game men in San Francisco is on the rise. Some experts fear that this signals resurgence of the HIV epidemic. Most believe the reason for the rise is a rise in unprotected sex among gay men. It's thought that the availability and success of HIV medications has created a false sense of security, increasing the incidence of unprotected sex. The current rate of infection is up 2.2%, up from 1.0% in 1997. Among gay men who also use IV drugs the rate is up 4.6%, up from 1.9% in 1997.
