Biaxin (clarithromycin)

Classification:

Antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. Also used as a preventative medication to decrease the risk of acquiring the AIDS defining illness mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).

A Guide to Mycobacterium Avium Complex

Form:

  • 250mg tablet (white in color)
  • 500mg tablet (yellow in color)
  • 125mg/5ml powder
  • 250mg/5ml powder

Usual Dosage:

500mg twice per day

Important Note - dose may be adjusted in the presence of kidney disease.

Instructions:

  • Can be taken with or without food.
  • If taking as a short course for an acute infection, take Biaxin until all the medication has been taken even if you feel better.
  • If taking as a prophylaxis medication, take as prescribed each and everyday.

    Important Note - Notify your doctor of all medications being taken prior to starting Biaxin.

Drug Interactions and Incompatibility:

  • Do not take with the drugs Orap, Propulsid, or Seldane
