Definition: A class of antiretroviral agent that binds to the envelope protein of the human CD4 and blocks the structural changes necessary for the virus to fuse with the cell. Because the virus can't penetrate the host cell membrane, it can't infect the cell, and therefore HIV replication is prevented. Without the freedom to replicate, the body's HIV viral load decreases, thus slowing or preventing damage to the immune system.
