Definition:
HLA-B*5701 is a small variation in the genetic structure of a human being. Some people have the variation some do not. Studies now indicate that those people who have the HLA-B*5701 are susceptible to the hypersensitivity reaction to the HIV medication Ziagen (abacavir). HIV specialists are now starting to use the HLA-B*5701 test to help identify those people who may have a hypersensitivity reaction to Ziagen (abacavir).
