Definition:
The specialized tissue which covers various passages and cavities exposed to the air such as the mouth, nose, inner portion of the eyelids, rectum, and vagina.

Examples:
Two examples of the word mucosa as it pertains to HIV and AIDS:
  • The inner lining of the rectum is known as the rectal mucosa.

  • The inner lining of the vagina is known as the vaginal mucosa.
