Norvir (ritonavir)

Protease inhibitor
Form:
  • 100mg capsule (white)
  • 80mg/cc oral solution
Usual Dosage:
Norvir is used to boost the effect of other protease inhibitors. The common dosage is usually 100mg to 200mg per day in a single dose or in divided doses. Norvir is no longer used as the lone protease inhibitor in any HIV medication regimen.
Instructions:
Take with meals, preferably a high fat meal. Capsules need to be refrigerated. Take along with the protease inhibitor that Norvir is boosting.
Side effects to report to your doctor:
  • nausea / vomiting /diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
  • numbness, tingling, or burning in feet or hands
Potential Drug Interactions:
  • Co-administration of Norvir with certain antihistamines, sedatives, ergots, or antiarrhythmics can result in serious side effects due to a change in liver metabolism.
  • Should not be used while taking Trazadone
  • Norvir containing meds and regimens should not be taken with the medications fluticasone (Flonase) or Advair.

If you are taking any of these drugs, consult your doctor prior to starting any regimen that includes Norvir.
