For the first time, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a generic form of an antiretroviral medication to treat HIV. Barr Laboratories has gained approval for its generic didanosine (ddI), a once a day therapy to treat HIV. The generic formulation of didanosine delayed release capsules will be available in the US and in foreign countries in 200mg, 250mg and 400mg dosages.

Didanosine is the generic version of Bristol Myers Squibb's Videx EC Deleayed Release Capsules.

Barr plans to launch the generic didanosine immediately.
