Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA)

Eligibility Requirement:

Anyone who worked for an employer of 20 or more employees.

Financial Eligibility:

No financial eligibility requirements.

Benefit Amounts:

Employee receive group health benefits by paying his/her own group rate premium.

Payment Intervals:

  • Premiums are paid monthly.
  • Coverage and eligibility limited to 18 months.
  • If disabled at the time of leaving, may be eligible for 29 months.
  • May keep coverage through new insurance wait period if there are pre-existing conditions.
  • Before COBRA ends, contact the insurance company for the availability of a conversion policy.

Duration of Coverage:

18 months in most cases but can extend to 29 months under certain circumstances.

How to Apply:

Must apply with your employer within 60 days of leaving the job.
