Social Security Disability (SSDI)

Eligibility Requirement:

Disability is defined as the inability to perform any substantial gainful activity (earning more than $800/mos, gross) and suffering from an incapacity or disease that is expected to last 12 months or longer or result in death.

Financial Eligibility:

Must have worked or paid into the system five out of the last ten years, if age 31 or more.

Benefit Amounts:

Varies from calendar year to calendar year.

Payment Intervals:

Paid on 3rd. of each month, covering prior month.

Note: There is a five month wait period from the month after disability onset date. Also benefits may or may not be retroactive to the date of application.

Duration of Coverage:

  • Long-term benefits based on continued eligibility.
  • Can be employed, but earning $800/month gross or less.
  • Work incentives exist to encourage employment.
