Question: How Did I Get HIV?

After receiving an HIV diagnosis the first question that comes to mind for most people is "how did I get HIV?" HIV transmission occurs for several reasons, some more common than others. Let's answer the question:

    "How did I get HIV?"

Answer: HIV is transmitted from person to person by coming in contact with infected bodily fluids. There are several ways to come in contact with these fluids. They include:
  • having unprotected sexual contact (oral, vaginal, or anal)
  • sharing needles while injecting drugs
  • during child birth and pregnancy
  • during breast feeding
  • receiving donated blood (due to testing of donated blood, this means has all but been eliminated)

How Does HIV Spread From Person to Person?

Important Information!
HIV can't be passed between two people by casual contact such as:

  • hugging
  • kissing
  • sharing dishes or cups
  • holding hands
