Herpes Simplex Treatment Found to Reduce Plasma and Genital HIV Viral Loads
Wednesday February 28, 2007
An article published in the February 22, 2007 issue of the The New England Journal of Medicine reported on a study that showed that the use of the herpes simplex medication Valtrex (valacyclovir) was associated with decreased HIV viral load levels in those women participating in the trial. In addition, there was a decreased HIV in vaginal fluid in those women taking Valtrex. Herpes simplex is known to increase the risk of HIV transmission because it makes genital tissue more susceptible to HIV transmission. Other studies have shown that there are peaks in HIV viral load during herpes simplex outbreaks. If indeed Valtrex does decrease genital and plasma HIV viral loads, the drug could be another choice for medical professionals in the fight to control the HIV epidemic around the world.
