Definition: The "backing up" of stomach acid into the esophogus - which connects the stomach to the back of the throat. The acid, being very strong, irritates the lining of the esophogus, causing burning and pain in the throat and chest. If the condition goes untreated, the acid can cause damage to the tissue of the esophogus, requiring intensive medicinal therapy or even surgery.
