Definition:
The virus that causes genital warts and is linked to cervical dysplasia (cell changes) and cervical cancer.

HPV Facts:

  • Affects more than 24 million Americans

  • The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that there are at least 500,000 new cases each year.

  • There is no specific cure for an HPV infection but in 2006 a new HPV vaccine was approved that prevents infection by four of the most dangerous types of HPV.

  • Cryotherapy (freezing), laser treatment, or conventional surgery can remove the genital warts caused by HPV.

  • The virus can be transmitted through sexual contact.

  • HPV is a frequently seen infection in women and men living with HIV/AIDS.
