The FDA has approved two new combination drugs for the treatment of HIV and AIDS. The new drugs are combinations of existing HIV medications. As with other combination drugs, the goal is to treat HIV and AIDS while improving adherence by minimizing pill burden and simplifying dosing schedules.

Epzicom is a combination of 600mg of Ziagen (abacavir) and 300mg of Epivir (lamivudine). The new combination will offer patients once daily dosing.

Truvada is the combination of 300mg of Viread (tenofovir) and 200mg of Emtriva (emtricitabine). The new combination will also offer once daily dosing.

At the time of this printing, it is not known when these two new drugs will be available at your local pharmacy. If you are interested in these new combinations consult your doctor to see if they are a good choice for you.
