Classification:
Maraviroc is the first HIV medication from the new class of HIV drugs called CCR5 inhibitors. By blocking the CCR5 attachment receptor on the CD4 cell, Maraviroc prevents HIV from attaching to the CD4 cell, thus preventing HIV from infecting the cell.Form:
- 150mg tablets
- 300mg tablets
Dosage:
- Standard Dose - 300mg twice daily
- Lower Dose - 150mg twice daily when used with Rescriptor or most Protease Inhibitors
- Higher Dose - 600mg twice daily when used with Sustiva
Instructions:
- Maraviroc can be taken with or without food.
- Maraviroc is taken as part of a HIV medication combination regimen.
- Doses should be taken around the same times each day, about 12 hours apart.
- It should be taken exactly as prescribed without missing or skipping doses.
Side Effects To Report To Your Doctor:
Clinical trials have shown that the most common side effects most common with Maraviroc include:
- cough
- fever
- upper respiratory infections
- rash
- sore muscles
- abdominal pain
- dizziness
Important Warnings:
- Maraviroc can increase the risk for heart problems such as heart attacks. Call your doctor or go to the emergency room if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, neck or jaw pain, left arm pain, or feel like you are going to pass out.
- Maraviroc can cause severe dizziness if you stand up too quickly.
- Maraviroc can put stress on your liver. Call your doctor immediately if you develop yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, abdominal pain, or vomiting.
Drug Interactions:
There are no known drug interactions with other HIV medications. However, there may be interactions with over-the-counter medications. Inform your doctor of all prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking before starting Maraviroc.More Information:
