Question: Can I be infected with HIV that's already resistant?
Answer: Yes, being infected with HIV that is already resistant is possible and becoming more common. Medications have been around for awhile and more people are taking them. Resistance is possible anytime someone is taking HIV medicines. A person can become infected for the first time with a resistant form of HIV; it's not only new infections that can be by resistant virus. People who are already HIV infected can be reinfected by another HIV-infected person. This can introduce resistant virus into the person that was already HIV infected. That's why condoms must be used even between two HIV-infected people.
